MEERKAT
I have fallen in love with with meerkats since I first saw them on Planet Earth, and only after that did I realize Timon from Lion King is also a meerkat. To me, they are a bunch of nervous and alert furry animals, with a strong sense of family and community and they are a delight in the desert where they inhabit. After some brief research, I learned that they are the most dedicated to their clan, where adult meerkats will take turns being the "sentry", to warn others of approaching dangers with loud cries. Nurseries are common also in a clan, where female without offspring will babysit the litter while other parents gather food. The babysitters will take the young below ground in the burrows when they deem the desert floors too dangerous (informed by warnings from the sentry). Upon further scrutiny, they are not the most friendly of animals, in fact, quite territorial and vicious in their own right, but their image and behavior have a special place in my heart.

This is actually really interesting. I always thought that meerkat were lone animals but instead they function in a clan and have a system set up. :O
ReplyDeleteThe meerkats are some of my favorite animals to watch when I go to the zoo. They are so cute and tiny but I didn't know they weren't very friendly. They always look kind of cuddly.
ReplyDeleteIt's really interesting to learn that meerkats are very community based and do everything as a unit. I like that they have a sentry system so everyone contributes to the clan's safety and I also thought it was very endearing that they have a babysitting system as well.
ReplyDeleteThese meerkats seem so friendly but it's interesting to find out they're not friendly. I have never seen them in person but I hope I get to see them one day.
ReplyDeleteThese creatures are so funny. Loved the show about them. I've never seen one in real life though.
ReplyDeleteThey're hilarious to watch at zoos. They all look like they've been part of some bar fight and all have black eye. Their inward bending arms also make them look funky.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I've ever read anything on Meerkats! They seem like really interesting animals. I'm really intrigued by their strong sense of family and community. They remind me a lot of wolves (my spirit animal), because there are specific roles to the members of the pack or clan.
ReplyDeleteMeerkats are funny! I love their name and wonder where it derives from. Apparently, they are desert animals. I love that they are so family-orientated; it makes them more relatable for me.
